Signs Your Thyroid May Be in Trouble

Tiredness, weight gain, palpitations, hair loss — symptoms easily brushed aside, because everyone assumes they are just stressed.

But · 5 min read · Sep 5, 2026

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck, just below the Adam's apple. The hormones it releases set the pace of metabolism throughout the body: heart rate, temperature, digestion, mood. When the thyroid works too hard or too little, almost every organ feels it.

Overactive thyroid: the body running too fast

  • Palpitations, a fast heartbeat, sometimes an irregular rhythm
  • Weight loss despite eating more, getting hungry quickly
  • Trembling hands, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, irritability
  • Intolerance of heat, sweating a lot
  • Loose stools several times a day
  • Bulging or gritty eyes in some cases

Underactive thyroid: the body running too slow

  • Persistent tiredness that does not lift even with plenty of sleep
  • Weight gain although your eating has not changed
  • Feeling the cold, dry skin, dry hair and hair loss
  • Stubborn constipation
  • Slowness, forgetfulness, low mood
  • Mild puffiness of the face and eyelids, a hoarse voice
  • Heavy or irregular periods
What makes thyroid disease so easy to miss is that the symptoms come on very gradually and look exactly like stress, poor sleep or ageing. A great many people live with it for years without knowing.

Who should think about getting screened

A simple blood test, usually starting with TSH, is enough to point your doctor in the right direction. It is worth asking to be checked if you fall into any of these groups:

  • Women, particularly from middle age onwards
  • A family history of thyroid disease or autoimmune disease
  • Women who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or who gave birth within the past year
  • Anyone who can feel a lump or nodule in the neck, or whose neck has grown larger
  • Anyone who has had radiotherapy to the neck or thyroid surgery
  • Anyone with the persistent symptoms above whose routine check-ups have found no cause

Thyroid disease during pregnancy needs particularly close monitoring, because it affects both the mother and the baby's development.

When to seek care immediately

Go to a medical facility right away if you notice a lump in the neck growing quickly, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing or a persistently hoarse voice.

The same applies to a high fever with a very fast heartbeat, trembling, agitation or confusion in someone with thyroid disease — this is an emergency.

Do not buy thyroid medication or change your own dose. The wrong dose can cause heart rhythm disturbances and osteoporosis.
